I’ve had two machines for quite some time: a dual PII (Celeron) 300MHz w/374MB RAM and a PIII 800 MHz w/512 MB RAM. The dual has been my primary server, hosting several web sites (www.mrchaski.com, www.mecworks.com, www.dikayl.com, www.localfilmmakers.com). It’s been a great machine, quietly running and currently has an uptime of

    8:50pm up 383 days, 3:42, 9 users, load average: 0.04, 0.01, 0.00
Cool! 8^)
My second machine has mainly been used as my desktop. However, although it’s a PIII 800MHz, it’s very slow at working with large images in Gimp. Also, I have started using it as a web server with virtual hosts (virtual0.mecworks.com, gallery.mecworks.com and this blog). More and more, it’s taken on a role as a server machine and is more unusable as a desktop for what I would like to do – photo editing and possibly some video stuff in the future. So, I have decided to replace the dual with a new AMD 64 motherboard, processor and memory. Re-purpose it as my desktop and move all services (DNS, virtual hosts, mail server for all virt hosts, user accounts, pop, web mail, etc. to this 800MHz machine, and change it to purely a server role. The new machine parts will be picked up tomarow and will include:

I already have two 80GB drives which I’ll mirror using Linux software RAID. This is a little small as far as disk space goes especialy for editing large photos. Hoever, I’ll probably either be able to get an external USB/Firewire drive or use NFS with the server to store images and data. This machine currently has two 250GB drives mirrores wich is really closer to what I wanted for storage but I think I can make everything work out OK.

Anyway, the hardware will be arriving at a local PC part store tomorrow afternoon and I’ll pick it up before heading to the SLLUG meeting tomorrow night.
