Rob Penrose
Rob was a good friend to many. Jim Freeman wrote an email today to several mutual friends with a link to Rob’s obituary published in today’s Deseret News. We are all very supprized at his passing. He was a very good person, a friend to everyone. I remember when I was working at Caldera, stopping by his office once in a while to talk about Linux and technology. He was always inviting and easy to talk to. He also knew my parents well and always asked me to say ‘hello’ when I saw them next. Rob, you will be missed by many…

Update: Fri Feb 4 19:20:51 MST 2005:
To answer or reply to a message in the Yahoo finance forum here, Rob, as far as friends and his immediate family are aware of, was not dealing with depression or simialr problems. He was a well natured person, active in his community and church. His death was a complete supprise to everyone which has left us all wondering why and exaclty what happend. While we may never know the details, all current indications are that this was directly related to what was going on in his work environment.
Thank you.

Having had a brother (who was quite the techie himself) commit suicide, I can relate a bit to this. My brother, Rick, also did not appear to most to be mentally ill, yet he took his own life in February 2002. After his death we all wondered what happened, and how this could have come to pass. He had gone through problems at work as the technical expertise was not always appreciated by those in management positions. Working on the computer systems dealing with airline reservations, he was let go with the huge problems that beset the entire industry in the wake of the 9-11 terrorism, but none of us thought that it would lead to him taking his own life and leaving his wife and four children. It was really only after his death that we were able to slowly piece things together and understand the pain and problems he was going through. I don’t think any of us will ever understand what he was thinking, nor can we place blame on anyone. That is for a power far above our level of comprehension, and for us to take such measures will only lead to the darkening of our hearts and souls. Instead we can just cherish the memories and try to build others around us so that they will be able to withstand the pressures they may feel. I hope that all who knew Rob can remember him and while acknowledging the tradgedy of his death, celebrate the way he lived.

Someone should have investigated the possibility of murder.
