GMRS J-Pole Antenna

Filed under: Shop Work — marc @ 11:13 am

A j-pole antenna for GMRS/FRS frequencies (462.550MHz - 467.725MHz)

This article will outline how to build a j-pole antenna for the GMRS/FRS radios. These radios are the type you can buy at sporting goods stores such as REI, Cabelas, etc. There are several radio manufacturers who make GMRS/FRS radios with removable antennas. This antenna can increase the range of these radios by miles!

NOTE: 1) You can only use this antenna with GMRS or GMRS/FRS combo radios which are built with removable antenna (you cannot use this antenna on or modify an FRS-only radio or as I understand it, GMRS/FRS radios which do not have a removable antenna). 2) You need an FCC license to use GMRS radios in the US (read the packaging on the radios you get for more info). Know your local laws to make sure it’s legal to use this antenna before building it!

WARNING: Torches, soldering irons and solder (especially, silver solder) are very HOT. Be very careful while building this antenna! Always wear safety goggles and other appropriate safety equipment.

Hero

Filed under: General — marc @ 11:31 pm

I finaly saw Yimou Zhang’s Hero (Ying xiong) tonight. One of the best movies I have seen this year. My frind Erik Brown told me about it about a month ago and I trust Erik’s oppinions quite a bit. It turns out that we have a similar taste in movies. I bought it and it’s sat on my shelf since then. Just too many things going on in my life to watch all the movies I want to in the short amount of time I have in the day. So, tonight I finaly had some time to sit down and take in the movie.

The cinematography is certainly one of the best efforts I have seen in describing emotion through color and scenes. The pictures, music and dialouge complement each other so well, one is not complete without the other two. Rarely have I seen the framing and colors of a scene play such a critical role in defining meaning as in this film. A masterpeice.

>>> UPDATE Oct. 28, 2005: Check out the new leaked D200 picures!

Well, it’s the show I’ve been waiting for for quite some time. I’ve been waiting for Nikon to release a new mid/low end “prosumer” level DSLR camera to compete against Canon in the 20D range. The PMA or Photo Marketing Association annual show starts today in Orlando Florida. Wish I was there.

Credit Card Fraud alert?

Filed under: General — marc @ 7:35 am

So, I’m pretty geeky, despite being active in swimming. cycling, camping, hiking, etc. - I am a geek. I have been involved with making electronic gizmos since I was small, in fact, I’ve been involved in making all types of “stuff” since I was very young. Some of my favorite books that I had read as a young boy are still on my shelf: The Boy Mechanic series from Popular Mechanics (early 20th centry), several computer books, etc. I remember reading my dad’s college physics texts during grade school through high schoool for fun - science is and always has been facinating to me. GMail now out of beta? What you gonna do with your 50?

Google’s GMail may just be about ready to leave beta. No, really. It seems that instead of the typical 5 or, some people have claimed 10 gmail invites they have in their queues, today most gmailers woke to find a stack of 50 gmail invites.

One of the most obvious reasons would be be that Google is ready to rapidly increase the ammount of people in the system on a scale never before seen and go from beta to full production. The invitation-only system has been a smart way to foster an elitist, geek-sheik community around gmail membership. The bright and shiny luster of a gmail account has waned a bit over the last year or so. The first invites were snatched up and some sold on ebay for primiums. This is no longer the case. Most of the name squatting has already happend, while there are several unque email addresses available, the good, short ones are most certainly all gone.
