PMA was a dissapointment for many Nikon fans
UPDATE Oct. 28, 2005: Check out the new leaked D200 picures!
Well, with the Photo Marketing Association Annual Show come and gone, many Nikon fans (I guess I include myself in there) were dissapointed that there wasn’t a new camera in the Canon 20D range. There were some supprizes though.
The D2Hs, a high speed, large buffer, 4.1 MP camera targeted at sports photographers was announced. It is, however, not targeted at the entry-level to mid-level DSLR enthusiast. The trademark “D50″ was registered by Nikon however, if placed in the Nikon line-up as expected, the D50 will compete with the Canon Digital Rebel line of cameras, not the 20D leaving this space inconspicuously empty.
One cannot help but notice the pleathora of available discounts and rebates on the D70 however. I checked yesterday on Nikon’s website to find a $100 rebate and an additional “bonus” $100 rebate. Hm. $200 off… This could mean that Nikon is noticing the reduced sales of the D70 lost to the Canon 20D and is trying to boost sales through rebates. It could also mean that another camera really is just around the corner but was not announced at PMA. Nikon tends to drop prices and/or offer rebates before a camera is being replaced or upgraded.
There’s far too much speculation going on with regard to Nikon’s (supposed) upcoming cameras. I’m certainly guilty of that myself but I can’t help but be anxious to see their new offering. Seeing that there’s a gaping hole in their line-up, one would assume something is coming soon…
As an avid follower of the digital SLR cameras, and a very satisfied owner of a Canon 10D, I don’t see why you would be so set on a Nikon. With Canon setting the benchmark, and the best runner-up probably being the Pentax, unless you have a whole bagfull of lenses, waiting for the Nikon seems somewhat illogical.
On a side note, the Speedlite 420 and 550 make a great combination for lighting solutions. They’re a great investment.

That was facetious right? ‘Cause all fanaticism aside, I don’t quite see the support for Pentax being a runner-up!
