Multiple Sclerosis 150 mile bike tour 2005

Filed under: Outdoors — marc @ 8:00 am
National Multiple Sclerosis, UT Chapter

This year I will be participating again in the Utah Multiple Sclerosis 150 mile bike tour. It’s a great opportunity that I try to take every year to help those suffering from MS. I think I’ve done the tour 7 or so times although I’ve lost count. I started in the early or mid 90’s and while I’ve missed a few years, I have ridden as often as I’ve been able.

Read on to find out more about MS, the ride and how you can help sponsor me…

Bad, bad server. No donut for you

Orkut’s performance is miserable these days. All of the icons and graphics rarely (if ever) show up when going to a new page or refreshing the current one. I get more server errors than I can shake a stick at. Messages show up in my inbox more that once.

Seabiscuit

Just finished Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand. An amazing book about a horse and the people that surrounded him. It’s more than just a story of success, it’s a story of the unlikely and downtrodden overcoming - both in Seabiscuit himself but also the men and women who’s lives were affected by the horse and each other.

Microsoft billboard truck at Brainshare 2005

Filed under: Linux — marc @ 7:36 pm

OK, I was a bit suprised at first but it certainly makes sense. I have been attending Novell’s Brainshare this week and I was walking accross the street on Wednesday to go to lunch with a friend. I was about half way accross when I noticed a large flatbead truck with a large billboard on the back coming toward me. Moving quickly to avoid being run over, I noticed a large add for Windows XP stretched across the billboard’s surface. They had also bought up most of the ad space at the Salt Lake City airport’s baggage claim area and had placed pro-microsoft ads there. Hmmm. It seems that Microsoft has taken notice of Novell’s strategy and apparently given it a large measure of validation. They wouldn’t spend money on advertising at Novell’s conference if they didn’t think Novell didn’t have a chance of winning over customers.

Splitting time

This week (and last weekend) at Brainshare, I’ve been splitting my time between the the three groups I’m involved with: Novell Users International (NUI), Salt Lake Linux Users Group (SLLUG) and Novell (iPrint).

Unfortunately, I’ve been so busy I have not been able to take any pictures yet but I will today. I will be at the SLLUG table in the Develper’s Den today, iPrint table tomorrow and around helping NUI, and iPrint on Friday.

BTW, I’m looking forward to the concert tonight. Train is perfoming at the Delta Center for the Novell Brainshare party (for thoes attending Brainshare and Novell employees). Cool.

Novell, NUI, Brainshare and Linux/OpenSource

Filed under: Linux — marc @ 9:28 pm

Well, I’m very excited about Brainshare which starts tomorrow. Not only because I work for Novell but because I am just as supprised about the announcements as anyone else is. Novell is very good about keeping announments away from employees who don’t need to know as well as the public. I assume there will be some impressive OpenSource announcements made as well as product and partner related news. From what I hear, the news presses will be sent out Monday and Tuesday mornings. I’ll try to blog what I get from the show floor. I’ll also be taking pictures and posting there both here and in my gallery.

Wildfire in Vineyard

Filed under: Outdoors — marc @ 8:06 am

Yesterday as I was traveling home I noticed some columns of smoke rising up into the sky west of the highway. Being the curious type, I drove closer trying to find out was was burning. Apparenlty there were several other that were also the curious type - the streets of Vineyard, UT were busy with people trying to get a glimps of the fires. Vineyard is an old steel town SouthWest of the old Geneva Steel Works. The site was shut down a few years ago putting a large population of the local towns out of work. The closure has played a large role in cleaning up the air quality in the valley. I remember seeing thick purple, orange or red smog surounding the plant when I first started commuting to work in Utah Valley. The steel industry in Utah had been dying since the mid ’80s so the closure was an inevitable result of the state of the economy but also the increase in technology firms located in the valley.

The next sllug meeting is already upon us and will have some pretty good stuff. We’ll be discussing both LVM and Netfilter (both of which could have their own meeting IMO). It should be a very interesting meeting. So, if you’re in the area, feel free to stop by this Wednesday. I’ve included the announcement below so that you can get the directions and time.

Novell announces SuSE 9.3 and Open Enterprise Server

Filed under: Linux — marc @ 7:10 am

Novell N

Novell announced today that it is releasing both SuSE Linux Professional 9.3 desktop OS and the Open Enterprise Server products.

Well, it’s about time! 8^) I can say that because working on them has been a long and rewarding but awefully busy experience. In my oppinion - they rock. We really did a great job on them and hopefully the community will like them as much as I do. Admittedly, I work on the server side of the printing system for Open Enterprise Server (OES) so I did’nt get a chance to play around with the 9.3 stuff as much as I would have liked but all I can say about the OES stuff is that it’s really good.

Recumbents, #hpv on irc.freenode.net

Marc on his Haluzak Horizon recumbent

I’ve been riding a recumbent for about 4 and 1/2 years now. While I still have my mountain bike, I spend most of my riding on my recumbent. In fact, I trippled my riding distance when switching to my recumbent. Part due to the recuded rolling resistance of the thiner tires but mostly due to the nicer support. I usualy ride for at least two hours and sometimes more and while I’ll be tired afterwards, I’ll never have saddle sore.

My first and current recumbent bike is a Haluzak Horizon. I chose it for some very specific reasons. A) short wheel base allows for mounting in standard bike racks, B) Under the Seat Stearing (USS) provides me with a more natural position for my hands on long rides, C) maker’s reputation - Haluzak is well known for making high quality recumbents, D) standard componants - the Horizon uses 26″ rear wheel, Shimano 105 cranks and LX componants making it easy to fix and maintain E) comfort.

Joe’s Crab Shack (where the steak sucks)

Filed under: General — marc @ 7:01 am
Mayuko at Joe's Crab Shack

My friend Mayuko and I went to see Million Dollar Baby last Saturday. It was a great movie and we decided to grab some food afterward. We went to Joe’s Crab Shack since it was close. Oh boy - that was a Mistake. A) never get steak at a seafood place. B) never order something that takes a while to cook an hour before they close the restaurant. The steak was hard and only warm. It was obvious that they had cooked it up a while before and the chicken was as tough as jerky and just as cold as the steak. I was not impressed. Mayuko ordered a sea food platter and it looked somewhat decent. The big fish behind Mayuko is not indicative of the overall food quality.
