Splitting time

This week (and last weekend) at Brainshare, I’ve been splitting my time between the the three groups I’m involved with: Novell Users International (NUI), Salt Lake Linux Users Group (SLLUG) and Novell (iPrint).

Unfortunately, I’ve been so busy I have not been able to take any pictures yet but I will today. I will be at the SLLUG table in the Develper’s Den today, iPrint table tomorrow and around helping NUI, and iPrint on Friday.

BTW, I’m looking forward to the concert tonight. Train is perfoming at the Delta Center for the Novell Brainshare party (for thoes attending Brainshare and Novell employees). Cool.

I think you’re missing your mark on your comments yesterday about merging the open source community with NUI and how to bring in linux user groups into this process. Why bother with that? Why worry about that right now? At this point in the game, who cares if they join into this or not?

You have an entire community of loyal Netware people who have been doing the same thing the same way for the past 5-10 years. What about bringing linux to them? Put it in that perspective, and you have a whole community that’s ingnorant, and frankly, a little intimidated (terrified) by linux. You need to begin introducing them to linux first, before worrying about how the open source community is going to react to NUI.

I was involved with NUI years ago. I doubt there’s anyone there who’d know me now, but the Novell Netware community didn’t just up and vanish between then and now.

I’d be more interested in knowing how y’all are going to approach this process than worrying about introducing Novell to the open source community.

Thought I’d left a comment here earlier about NUI needing to reach out to Netware users more than needing to bring in linux user groups, but I don’t see it now……

I am interested in how NUI is going to approach Novell’s existing Netware customer base.

Hi Jon,

I haven’t seen your other comment but you’re welcome to leave any feedback you’d like. NUI has to do both. The Linux user groups obviously are not going to address Netware OS user’s needs so it’s up to NUI to continue to support users in that area. I doubt that I can really speak well to that direction of NUI with regard to the Netware OS though. I have been asked to fill a position on the board this year to bring my Linux/OpenSource experience to the table. There are many on the board that have deep Netware OS experience that are more qualified than I for that – that’s why they’re on the board. Your concern is real and NUI cannot (and will not) stop supporting users of the Netware OS.

Looking forward at Novell’s position and direction, I see “Netware” as a group of services, not the OS itself. Thoes services will run on either the Netware OS or on Linux. As a result, the direction of NUI is to support Novell’s users in using it’s products and services which will include both operating systems. The Linux community will never align itself with a single vendor so it’s up to NUI to build Linux support within it’s organization (SIGs maybe?) and to encourage it’s members to be active members of the Linux community (the opposite situation where the Linux community takes intrest in the Netware OS or NUI will never happen on a large scale IMO). This can happen through cross-pollination of group activities such as install-fests, speakers, etc. Both groups have a lot of resources avaialble to them and there’s a lot of overlap in Linux topics and interests (NUI being a superset of the LUG interests).

I’d like to hear more of your thoughts on NUI’s support of Netware users.

I found your comment. I had inadvertently marked it as spam with a huge group of comment spam I received that day. Sorry! It’s back now 8^) BTW, it’s a great comment. Thanks for your input – I’ll let my other comment stand as a reply to both of your entries. NUI has to do both – you’re right. But being a part of the OpenSource community is really, really important. NUI should aim to do the same at Novell – give back to the OpenSource community more than it takes. However, for it to do that, NUI has to help it’s members understand and be comfortable with Linux.
