A/C getting installed today

Filed under: General — marc @ 5:02 pm

I took the day off today so that I could be here when the A/C installers arrived to install a new furnace and A/C unit. I’ve been living on a swamp cooler through the summers since I moved it and I am pretty tired of it not working well on humid days and the mold and mildue are not good for my allergies. So, I bit the bullet as it were, and have decieded to get a new cooling system installed. When they arrived to do the initial assesment, they recommended that the entire 30-year-old furnace unit also be replaced with a new one. I agreed so I’m getting the whole sh’bang.

The Furnace and blower did not arrive today so they will be here a half day and half day tomorrow. So, I’ll head back into work for the half day on each day instead of taking a whole day today

Converted all RPMs/scripts to autobuild

Filed under: Linux — marc @ 9:45 pm

Today I finished developing/converting the build system we us in iPrint from building in static chrooted build environments to building in a similar yet “created on-demand” chrooted build system developed at SuSE called autobuild. The process I’ve worked on is a complete integration with our internal CVS repositories. A project is checked out from CVS which contains the spec file which is modified to contain the correct version, which in the case of iPrint, includes the date. This makes versioning nice since the major version, say 5.0 is the first part of the RPM version, the date stamp (YYYYMMDD) is the second part. The RPM release in our case is the number of times we build on that day. So, for the server RPM, we might have novell-iprint-server-5.0.20050620-1.i586.rpm for the first RPM built on June 20 of 2005 and so on. This system of versioning makes dealing with RPM releases very easy as we know immediately when an RPM was made just by looking at it. Also, keeping the date in the version rather than the release field satisfies autobuild’s need to set the release itself.

Planet SuSE and Planet N are missing some of my stories

Filed under: General, Family — marc @ 6:51 am

Ever since I published the article about Benjamin’s passing, both Planet N and Planet SuSE have not aggregated any of my stories. I can’t figure out why but that story was different than all the others in that it had it’s comments turned off. That’s the only difference I can see.

I don’t know what agregation software they are useing but it might be the same since it’s acting similar. Other places which syndicate my blog are not having any problems (http://www.ucboyz.net/) so I figure it must be a problem with the software not handeling the feed properly. Weird.

Recommended Firefox Extensions

Filed under: General, Linux — marc @ 8:33 am

Firefox is one of the best, if not the the best web browsers available today. It’s a poster child for the OpenSource movement and a tribute to the fact that there will alway be more talented engineers outside an organization than in. Thoes engineers program because they enjoy it and find OpenSource projects outside of their work environment to fill their creative need.

Benjamin Glen Denna

Filed under: Family — marc @ 7:24 pm

Benjamin Glen Denna 1981 ~ 2005

Benjamin Glen Denna, age 23, passed away quietly at his home on May 27, 2005, concluding a life long battle with heart disease. Benjamin was born July 24, 1981, in Provo, Utah, to Eric and Lyn Denna. He graduated from Timpanogos High School in 2000 and served an LDS mission at the Church Historical Archives. Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and earning his second degree black belt in karate are only two of the many accomplishments that demonstrated his determined spirit. His love for music was surpassed only by his perseverance in making beautiful music. His thirst for gospel truth was never quenched. No stranger to suffering, he showed more meekness in trials while finding more joy in life. He and his family wish to express thanks for the many medical professionals at Moffit Hospital in San Francisco, Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, and LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City for their years of unselfish care in his behalf. A viewing will be held Sunday, June 12, 2005, from 6-8 p.m. in Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 13, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the Heatheridge Stake Center, 450 East 2000 North, Orem. Friends and family may also call Monday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the Stake Center. In lieu of flowers a trust fund has been set up in Benjamin’s name to be used to support missionaries needing assistance. Donations can be sent to The Benjamin Glen Denna Memorial Missionary Trust Fund at 1722 N. 710 E., Orem, UT 84097. Condolences may be sent to the family at: www.walkerfamilymortuaries.com

Originaly published in the Deseret News on 6/12/2005.

Lyn, Benjamin’s mother is my cousin. Benjamin was a very special person. He always cared more for others than himself and truely lived a Christ-like life. His last days were spent with his family and thoes that he loved. A lifetime of painful trials and hardships was outweighed by Benjamin’s kindness, beautiful music, service and ability to not only overcome but to excell at what he did in life. I am personaly touched by his example and the life he lead. Thanks Benjamin.

Technical Discussion by Andrey Filippov. He will cover his work on GPL’d software and OpenSource hardware based high speed, high resolution, and networked cameras. The camera design has been implemented in FPGA which reduces costs of both implementation and manufacture. Andrew Felippov has also had articals about his work published several times including a recent write up in Linux Devices. I also talked about Andrey’s work in a previous article here on Mecworks.

www.mecworks.com crashed

Filed under: Linux — marc @ 5:22 am

One of my Linux servers crashed last night. Well, I’m not sure if it crashed for sure, it could be that the power supply has gone bad. When I try to start it, the computer powers up then just about when it seems that the disks have spun up, the power cuts and everything goes dark.
