Kinetic Road Machine Bicycle Trainer & PBS in High Definition

Filed under: Exertion, Tech — marc @ 9:30 am

The weather last night was cold and rainy so I put my mountain bike (with Specialized Fat Boy 1.25″ slicks) on my new Kinetic Road Machine fluid trainer and watched PBS HD for about an hour and a half. PBS HD has got to be one of the best high definition stations I get. There’s just something so cool about watching Nova and Nature in high definition that rocks my world.

Bash Scripting Tip: processing filenames with spaces

I can’t take credit for this. Stuart Jansen of Guru Labs referenced Tensai’s brilliance (nice play on words Stuart. For thoes who don’t know, ‘tensai’ in Japanese means smart or brilliant). Tensai is one of the members of PLUG and is also on irc.freenode.net’s #utah most of the time. Tensai in turn blames Hans Fugal for actually pointing him in the direction of this solution. And so we find that knowledge always exists, not unlike matter, neither destroyed or created, just changing forms. I wanted to get this down in my blog because it’s a good place to have ideas which are useful and hopefully it will help someone else.

‘nother ride

Filed under: Exertion — marc @ 8:47 pm

Feeling a bit run down. I rode pretty hard yesterday then once I got home I ended up talking on the phone till 1:30am with Carrie - a good friend of mine. There was way too much to talk about … so ummm…

I had to get up at 6:30 this morning - I was sleep-walking the whole day so tonight I only did a short ride and felt pretty much exhausted through the whole thing.

  • 18.83mi
  • 14.3mph ave.
  • 547ft gain
  • 1h 18m 36s

Tonight I’m kickin’ it with some 80’s old-school Simple Minds and Tears for Fears. ’80s music just rocks - plain and simple.

Another ride. This time, cold, rainy and wonderful.

Filed under: Outdoors, Exertion — marc @ 8:51 pm

I rode up to Vivian twice before heading back home (bet you couldn’t have guessed that - ha!). It was cold and rainy as I headed down from Vivian Park the first time. Looking over my sholder at Bridal Veil Falls I saw the most amazing rainbow ever. I also saw a deer and a rabbit on the trail this eveing. Fall colors are in full swing. They are incredibly bright this year with deep reds and suprizingly very little yellow yet. I’m amazed at the richness of the colors which is definitely due to the heavy precipitation we had this past year. So cool.

Ride and other things

Did a short ride to Vivian Park and came back early to watch Laura Black’s volleyball game. I invited a couple friends Abe Allan (who I’m pretty sure would like to be hooked up with Laura) and Jason Larsen to come to the game - both had other plans and Laura was sick so she wasn’t there anyway. So, I know one other player there - Scott (don’t know his last name) so I stayed and watched while I read from a new Utah Valley history book I picked up at Borders over the weekend. Pretty cool book.

Ride stats:

Two rides

Filed under: Exertion — marc @ 7:40 pm

I rode last evening and tonight. After work I stopped by a local bike store with my clipless pedals and biking gear. They put my pedals on the Specialized Tarmac Expert which they had transfered from another store. I then road about 5 miles or so and did some hill climbing - the Tarmac line of bikes only come with double, not tripple chainrings. The hills were a bit harder to climb than with the Trek Madone that I rode the other day however, the tarmac is such a nice bike. I have decided that I will get the Tarmac Expert however, I’m going to wait for a couple weeks to make sure that I’ll have the financing and that I really want to lay out $2500 + shoes and pedals for another bike.

Took half a day off to take care of some things and do some riding. Went twice to Vivian Park before heading to Pleasant Grove then home. Nice ride, the weather was great. I stopped by Mad Dog Cycles and Bingham Cyclery to look at road bikes. I’m concidering the Specialized Tarmac Comp - an all carbon fram with Shimano Ultegra shifters and 105 breaks. Nice bike. Also I took a look at a Trek Madone as well. Same componants for the most part. Both are nice bikes for sure. I plan on riding both next week to see how they actually feel.

Mountain Bike ride: 1h 57m 55s (and golf)

Filed under: Exertion — marc @ 7:57 pm

Today, our team at work had a “team day” or whatever you want to call it. We went to Wasatch State Golf course and played a round of 9 holes at 10am. It was pretty fun but mostly because I was hanging out with some cool people and having a good time. I’m no fan of golf and don’t think I’d be willing to head out on a course on my own or even if I was paid to do it. Anyway, we ended up grabbing some luch at a local restaurant in Midway that was suprisingly good and served quart sized mugs with the soda you ordered (no wimpy 12oz. cups there). I think its called the Mountain Grill or something like that. Anyway, pretty good.

Started the day off with a couple friends coming along for the ride. Abe Allan and Jason Larson showed up at my place around 10am or so. We spent the next half hour or so fixing their flat tires before heading off. It was a great ride to Vivian at a much more leisurely pace than I’m used to. It was nice to take a little more time to enjoy the canyon today. We stopped to refill water in their water bottles (Abe didn’t bring one) at a couple fountains along the way. On the way back, we stopped at the Subway sandwich shop at the mouth of Provo Canyon where we grabbed some lunch and headed back to my place. It was really a good ride and good to ride with some friends for a change.
