Here’s a picture of my “server room”. I couldn’t afford a rack at the moment but had an unused storage shelf in the basement. So, here you see the extremely expensive (ha!) Mecworks setup:

The top server runs www.mecworks.com and a couple other virtual hosts and DNS. It’s a blazingly fast. 6 year old dual Intel Celeron 300MHz with 256MB ram. Whoa! Hold yer horses – this baby’s gonna fly away! I’m slowly decommissioning it… In doing so, I’ve been moving all services to the second server (middle of the rack virtual0.mecworks.com) which is quite an improvement – a 4 year old single 800MHz Intel PIII with 512MB ram. Wow! OK, maybe not a great improvement but it doesn’t run X – just some virtual hosts and email so it has all the power it needs. The extremely pricey monitor is a salvaged VGA monitor I picked up from a friend for free (I actually have to return it sometime but I gave him a 19″ in exchange so I don’t think he really wants this one back). There’s a short in the 15-pin connector so if you bump the connector where it enters the back of the computer, the monitor loses vertical hold. Nice! :)
Both servers, the switch and the DSL modem are all running on a single 700VA UPS. I think that’s a bit underpowered so I am looking to add a second UPS in the near future. The monitor is not on the UPS…
Well, that’s it. A server room on the (really, really) cheap.
