Sonic Impact T-Amp Power Supply PCB design and mods

I ordered 4 Sonic Impact T-Amps which arrived a week ago. I will be reboxing them. One for the office…one for home. Maybe some Christmas presents too.

Came home last night after spending Thanksgiving with the fam and worked a bit more on learning Eagle which I am using so that I can design a PCB layout for a power supply I’m designing. It will be a 13v 5A power supply for one of my Sonic Impact T-Amps which I received a few days ago! Way cool! I’ve gotten all the parts necessary to build the power supply and rebox the amp in a nice cabinet with gold-plated binding posts and RCA input jacks. Hopefully I’ll get a lot done on it today. We’ll see.

I’ll write up more about the power supply and the mods as I get them done. Currently, the planed modifications are:

New enclosure
13v 5A regulated PS
Gold plated binding posts and RCA input jacks
Better volume control potentiometer
Separate on/off switch
Replace input capacitors with 2.2µF Mylar film type

At sometime in the near future, I would also like to add the 1545 DAC Kit A.K.A the “Monica 2″ from DiyParadise as a second input source for the amp. Very cool stuff indeed.

I bought a Sonic Impact T amp based on good reviews such as this one, but my experience was the opposite of everyone else’s. I think the product is a total piece of junk. Mine stopped working the day I bought it. The company has no contact information and some of the worst customer service in the industry. That’s really saying something.

Bummer! Mine has worked great since the day I got it. I modded it and it has worked even better. But there were some reports of some bad units out there. Seems like you got one. That’s too bad. I actually bought 4 and have only modded one of them so far but I have the parts to do one more of the 4 that I have. One of my friends will buy another and I plan on modding one and giving it away as a gift.

I bought a used Sonic T amp from a friend and hooked it up to an old console stereo from the 70′s. The speakers are 10″ woofers and a three way design. The Sonic T powers it very well and It sounded awesome hooked up to my ipod. It makes for a great sounding and very inexpensive system (I got the console stereo for free!)

Hey Jordan, that’s really cool! I re-boxed mine, added new input caps and a power supply and it’s one of the best sounding amps I’ve heard. Cool that you got the console stereo for free.

My next project will be using the Sonic T for powering my surround and center speakers in my home theater system. I bought a Lexicon Pro Logic surround processor and plan on using two of the already modified T amps that Parts Express sells. I think it will sound killer. The center channel speaker that i am going to get has a 96db efficiency so it will sing! Ill let you know how it sounds when I am done with my set up.

Hey SV, it actually turned out really good. I built a power supply and moded the T-Amp to bypass the input stage on the amp. It’s really quiet and sounds great. I have pictures of the whole thing bu still have to write up a story on it.
