Saturday evening, Dec. 10, 2005. virtual0.mecworks.com, my “main” server experienced a HD failure on it’s root hard drive. The LVM array with all the data survived intact, the root drive with the OS did not. I was able to salvage most settings and configuration but it took over 12 hours to get the machine back up and running smoothly. There’s still some work that needs to be done and some missing configuration files that need to be re-crafted. It’s nice to spend a weekend in December rebuilding a server when you’d rather be out with friends at a Christmas party or something like that.
Oh, actually I was at a Christmas party…Oh how easily the painful parts of our lives are hidden from our mind…I was hosting a Christmas party that night. The HD died one hour before guests were to start arriving. Knowing that I could not even start working on the restoration until well past midnight did not bode well with me. It was a fun evening and I was able to forget my troubles for a few hours but at 1:30am the work started. I worked till past 3:00am then again for about 4 hours in the morning before heading to church then started at it again from 6pm to 1am this morning.
Things are almost back to normal. I’m tired. It was not the most enjoyable weekend. But I did get to hang out with Melissa, Melissa, Erin and some guys…what were there names….? Ah, I forget…
